A cheeky, sophisticated, and strikingly illustrated guide that leaves generic English reference books in the dust. When prominent Barcelona-based illustrator Luci Gutierrez found herself tuning out in English class, she used her love of drawing to help retain what she'd learned. Ditching the kind of bland and useless phrases that fill most English textbooks, Gutierrez uses whimsical characters, cheeky dialogue, and even insults to bring vocabulary, grammar, and usage topics to life. Nearly forty-seven million people in the United States speak a language other than English at home, and even most native speakers struggle with subtle distinctions, such as when to use whether as opposed to if. (For example: I wonder whether I should have added a little more poison to his tea.) Already published to wide acclaim abroad, English Is Not Easy is sure to delight grammar mavens and students of English in America.

As an ESL teacher, I do not see how this book is useful in its original form. The graphics are inappropriate for the subject matter. If it were a book on slang, I could understand how certain topics and graphics might be used. But, we don't need to learn prepositions by "Mr. Sweat is in Mrs. Sweat" nor do we need to see a man sucking on a woman's toe to learn the verb "suck." If you ignore the graphics and some of the vocabulary, the book was well written.

Some excellent grammar points with some rather sexually graphic drawings to illustrate them on occasion. Otherwise a real gem.

For all those who picked up English as a Second language at a later stage in life this book can be a tremendously amusing and helpful resource, as the illustrations do a great job explaining a lot of the weird linguistic idiosyncrasies we native speakers take for granted. Some of the cartoons are a bit on the naughty side, however, so I caution against using it as a learning tool with kids.
