I only read this because it was in the 'librarian recommended' part of Ocean Park library (I can't actually remember what it's called, but that's the gist of it). I'm so glad a: that whoever recommended it did so, and b: that I was at the library when it was there, and c: that I picked it up.
Easily one of the best books I read last year. So so well written, so interesting, and such a brilliant story.
I even felt compelled to put a post-it note on the book when I returned it, in the hope that the person who'd recommended it would realise how grateful I was.

The novel provides two stories of Antarctic expeditions in which the characters' motivations and decisions parallel each other. Rather than being written in alternating chapters, it may have been more effective as two consecutive narratives. One theme is the way in which history is written and true stories hidden; another is how we make decisions under extreme conditions. An enjoyable read that is very good at evoking the Antarctic environment.
