This book was a powerful retelling of true events. What I loved most is that it was written in verses, that means each verse had a meaning. I haven’t read many Holocaust fiction and nonfiction books but this is one of the better books out there. I liked how the author tastefully retold the events and included real messages from characters in the story. I also appreciated the information at the end of the book explaining in more detail the situation the girls were in and what became of them after the war. I found the words insightful and important. I wanted to jump into the story and wrap my arms around the girls. I wanted to tell them how brave they were and how inspiring their story was. To know this was based on a true story just makes it that much more enthralling. I just wished they had opened up and went into more details about the girls past. - @momo of Hamilton Public Library's Teen Review Board

This novel in verse is based on actual events. It captures the terror and privations of life at Auschwitz. Historical information at the end includes pictures of the origami heart at the center of the story. It survives in a Holocaust museum to this day.
