Maisie Dobbs entered domestic service in 1910 at thirteen, working for Lady Rowan Compton. When her remarkable intelligence is discovered by her employer, Maisie becomes the pupil of Maurice Blanche, a learned friend of the Comptons. In 1929, following an apprenticeship with Blanche, Maisie hangs out her shingle: "M. Dobbs, trade and personal investigations." She soon becomes enmeshed in a mystery surrounding The Retreat, a reclusive community of wounded WWI veterans. At first, Maisie only suspects foul play, but she must act quickly when Lady Rowan's son decides to sign away his fortune and take refuge there. Maisie hurriedly investigates, uncovering a disturbing mystery, which, in an astonishing denouement, gives Maisie the courage to confront a ghost that has haunted her for years.

I really enjoyed reading this book - the first in a long series. The author has woven a wonderful story with incredible characters. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

I've found another favorite series, author and detective. An extremely enjoyable book and I can't wait to get the next in this series. I look forward to weeks of enjoyment with Ms. Winspear's novels.

For those who like their mysteries with historical detail, social context and fully developed characters with a back story, then Maisie Dobbs, set in England in the aftermath of World War One, is for you.

I was craving tea the entire time I read this book! Maisie Dobbs is certainly a likable and clever heroine, though I can only assume she is developed further throughout the series. While the mystery itself was interesting--the best part of the novel involved the flashback to Maisie's past, which will appeal to fans of Downton Abbey (like myself) and those who also enjoy Upstairs, Downstairs.

I liked this book, the characters, the WWI fiction and the upstairs downstairs aspects. There is a lot of good stuff here but personally I like a bit more grit to my mysteries.

A cozy mystery set in London right after WW1 with a female protagonist. This novel gives the reader a since of life in London right after the war. This is the first novel in the series.

A nice blend of historical fiction and mystery and - hooray! - it's the first in a lengthy series. Maisie is perhaps not the world's MOST fully-developed character (despite at least a third of this book being devoted to her backstory, I feel like I still struggled to understand fully what motivated her) but there is a lot of great historical detail, and the ending made me tear up. Looking forward to reading more.

I was born in 1940 and my father was in the first war in 1917. He never spoke a word about it. Mom told us children he was an ambulance runner who, wounded on the battlefield, lay there for over two days. He could hardly breathe and died when I was 15. I was always sad and in reading these books, I think it was in my DNA. War effects the coming generations. Even today soldiers experience PST.

Set a few years after the Great War has ended, Maisie is just setting up her investigation business and getting a few clients as a sole businesswoman. This book has a big old flashback to Maisie's later childhood and teen years, and her experience in the war.

A sober book, with very precise dialogue and characterization. Also nice attention to detail both in setting and action - for instance Maisie sometimes physically imitates the posture of someone else and then has a flash of intuition about what their state of mind is.

A unique, great mystery.

"...It is interesting, Maisie, how a time of war can give a human being purpose. Especially when that purpose, that power, so to speak, is derived from something so essentially evil."
