Flora can't wait to leave Bancree. It's only a small island with nothing to do. She's seventeen years old and has one more year of high school left before she can see more of the world. When her boyfriend leaves to go to university Flora is all alone because she doesn't have any other friends. His departure leaves her questioning their relationship's foundation. Fortunately Flora's loneliness doesn't last too long, because strangers move into the dilapidated cottage on Dog Rock. One of them is a girl her age named Ailsa and they become friends right away.
Flora can't deny something sinister is happening on the island. Men are disappearing and people are starting to get afraid. Flora can't believe it at first, but when someone she knows turns up missing she has to acknowledge there's a problem. Is Flora safe herself or is there something happening that she can't escape because she's part of it?

Myth, mystery and atmosphere. This was a surprisingly wonderful read - not what I expected at all.
