A collection of Wallace's early stories, ranging from short and shocking sketches to a bombastic novella that rails against the binary limitations imposed on American literature in the late 20th century. In the attempt to create a literature that fully engages the complex contemporary world, Wallace uses the telltale iconography of modern media and consumption culture, ranging from the game show "Jeapordy!" and guest interviews on David Letterman to the advertisement campaign of the McDonalds Corporation and the implicit political messages in Hawaii Five-O. I particularly enjoyed the short historical fiction "Lyndon," which managed to successfully restore the former American president to life as a living character, albeit using details largely dreamed up by the author. The final novella, "Westward the Course of Empire Makes Its Way," is undoubtedly overblown: what starts as a simple road trip story is taken through every possible convolution and more than a few jabs at John Barth along the way, but to readers of Infinite Jest it may be of some interest as a prospectus of sorts for the book he would later write.

An excellent collection of short stories. Funny engaging and definitely off beat. David Foster Wallace is a genius writer. Some people might find some of the stories offensive but if you can handle them, they are great,

The "OverDrive" software that is required to download this audiobook does NOT play the WMA format that the book is available in.

You only realize this after having to both download and install the OverDrive software on your Mac.

What a pain in the toches.
