"Detective Tracy Crosswhite has a skill, and a soft spot, for tackling unsolved crimes. Having lost her own sister to murder at a young age, Tracy has dedicated her career to bringing justice and closure to the families and friends of victims of crime. So when Jenny, a former police academy classmate and protégé, asks Tracy to help solve a cold case that involves the suspicious suicide of a Native American high school girl forty years earlier, Tracy agrees. Following up on evidence Jenny's detective father collected when he was the investigating deputy, Tracy probes one small town's memory and finds dark, well-concealed secrets hidden within the community's fabric. Can Tracy uphold the promise she's made to the dead girl's family and deliver the truth of what happened to their daughter? Or will she become the next victim?"--

This is the third book for me from Dugoni and probably my last. I found a couple of true issues: the disappearance, abuse, killing and struggle indigenous women (and men) live with was well noted; the comment/writing about police officers having few perks on the job - it's certainly not the pay, not the hours, not the praise, definitely not the quality family time invested by the officers. Yes, the flow was good, the procedures and sleuthing was good.

Whoa! My antenna sparked with the characterization of the lawyer. A scumbag? Not a good start for me. Haven't we battered this group of people enough? How about making that father/lawyer/grandfather Irish, Italian to German? During investigation the ex-wife didn't shed tears? I don't know too many abused wives or ex-wives that have any tears left. So, no, I didn't care for that characterization either - despite the outcome. These words and scenarios due a great disservice and perpetuate the divisiveness. OK, off my soapbox and returning the book.

I really like this series! Reading the first two is not necessary to enjoy this one, but they’re great too, and will add some backstory to the main characters.

A little too much about the lawyer boyfriend. Did the author need to "prove" Tracy is straight to his readers?
