This book is set in the country of Nepal. About a young orphan boy, Nandu, who tries to upgrade his life. It's more of a "explore and take in the scenery" style of book, rich with descriptive details. It has 5 parts which move along at a pretty good pace with action sprinkled in. It goes on his journey to blend the old way of his adopted father's way of living with the more modern world. For one section, I really liked how a teacher takes him under his wing to mentor. The young man starts to expand his view of the world and desires to become more.

Suited for 4 and 5th grade. With so many Nepalese and Kiren immigrants in Omaha, I was excited to read something that those children could relate to. I highly recommend to read to at least give your reading some diversity and depth. It is a solid, unique story not usually told in children's fiction and gives you a satisfied feeling with the conclusion.

I learned so much about Nepal in this book. We always hear about Mt Everest but this book is about a wholly different part of Nepal. Jungles and animals that I had no idea lived in that part of the world. There is also a lovely story of love and family and we see a boy growing up in very difficult circumstances and surviving and thriving.
