“I Am Number Four” is the first novel in the Lorien Legacy series. This science fiction novel is written by Pitacus Lore following the dangerous struggles of a teenage alien boy who typically goes by the name John Smith. John came to Earth when he was very young via a spaceship sent from his home planet Lorien. There were nine children, John included, and nine protectors who were all forced to leave Lorien in hopes of rebuilding their invaded planet. Since their landing, the Mogdorians, the hostile alien race that took over Lorien, have been hunting the remaining refugees on Earth. Now that three of the nine children are already dead, John is next on the Mogdorian target list and now he must fight for his life in this thrilling novel.
John has been living a difficult life over the past few years. He’s been forced to move around country to country, state to state and hasn’t been allowed to make any permanent friends. Already in the first few years of his life three of his species have been killed and John is always forced to remember it because of a spell placed upon him. The bad part is that for every dead Lorian, a scar is burned onto his leg and the remaining Lorians. The good thing is that the spell protects the Lorian children from the Mogdorians as the Lorian children can only be killed in a predetermined order as long as none of the children were to ever meet. The only problem is that John is the fourth Lorien Child and the first three were already killed. This novel is very interesting as John tries to fit into a normal high school life while also balancing the struggles of his alien background and his alien enemies. John’s life is constantly a struggle and he can only depend on his alien guardian Henri and his human friends Sarah and Sam to help him.
This book has a lot of topics and twists and is a fast read as it is very hard to put the book down. This books is very suspenseful and I recommend this book for senior elementary / high school students who are sci-fi lovers. This book does contain some swearing, intense battles, violent deaths, and other mature subject matter that may not be right for young children.

I Am Number Four

Lorien, a planet of eternal beauty, where there is no war or waste.

The overall life of which stood no chance against the tyrannical Mogadorian

civilization. The Mogadorian had not learn from there mistakes the way the

Loriens did. They had destroyed there world and desired to take over an

other planet. Not all was lost for the Lorians though they managed to get a

ship out of the planet before it was too late. The ship contained some species of animals from the planet; 9 Garde, the Lorians with powers received from the planet itself; 9 Cêpan, those who taught the Garde and looked after them. A charm was placed on the Garde so they could only be killed in order, also if anything were to try to kill them out of order the effect would be put on the would-be murderer. The ship escaped safely to earth. Three are now dead. Four is next.
The book opens with the death of Number Three. Number Four is introduced under the alias Daniel Jones as he leaves Florida. Henri, Four's Cêpan, tells him they are going to Paradise, Ohio. Henri makes a new I.D. for Four, giving him the name ‘John Smith.’
When they arrive to Paradise, Ohio and are settled in John goes to the local high school where he meets a beautiful gill named Sarah Heart and her ex-boyfriend Mark, the school jock who immediately begins to start picking on John.
During astronomy class, John's hands begin to hurt and glow. When John is back at his house, he realizes that his first legacy (Power) has arrived. Henri tells John that his first legacy is Lumen, the ability to produce light from his hands, accompanied by a developing resistance to fire. Henry uses a Loric stone to help spread his fire resistance.
With the arrival of John's legacies, Henri begins to train him. John also makes his first real friend, Sam Goode, who believes in aliens. He also grows closer to Sarah. At a town Halloween party John, Sarah, Sam, and Sarah's friend Emily are ambushed by Mark and some of his football jocks. John is enraged when they run off into the woods with Sarah. John chases the boys and finally finds Mark and his friends, easily defeating all of them and freeing Sarah. Sam witnesses much of the fight and becomes wary of John, avoiding him for some time. When John goes to Sam's house to talk to him, he threatens John with a gun but John convinces him he's not an alien so he leaves with a magazine on alien conspiracies.
Henri has gone to Athens, Ohio because he discovers an alien conspiracy magazine and goes to find out how they had gained information. Henry hasn't called John yet like he promised. So John gets Sam for help. Sams drives John to Athens, where they find Henri ambushed and captured inside the publisher's house. John's telekinesis legacy appears, and he uses it to save both Henri and Sam and escape the house as several Mogadorian scouts arrive. Henri tells Sam their whole story.
At a party at Mark's house, a fire starts, trapping Sarah on the second floor. John rushes in and saves her, revealing who and what he really is to her in the process. She still loves him, and John says he loves her too. He then proceeds to tells her everything about himself.
At school the next day, John fears that he will have to leave, as people had seen him jump out of the window and reported it. All seems to be going well when a fax arrives for John at the school saying "Are you Number Four?" John rushes home to find Mark, who has realized the truth. He then quickly goes back to the school to find Sarah when he realizes that the Mogadorians are on their way.
When the battle is finished John looses someone dear to his heart but discovers a new found asset. They may have escaped the battle but they aren’t out of the woods yet.
