This book is so cute and smart!! It reminds me of some of the great old-school cop movies, like "48 Hours" or "Beverly Hill Cop", except this book is written for younger audiences to enjoy too. =) It's funny, exciting, and highly entertaining. The artwork is adorable too. I can't recommend this book enough, it's fantastic! I think kids 11 or 12 and up would understand it best though, because the major plotline deals with the black market, and I don't know at what age kids learn about that stuff.

Something’s rotten in Kalamazoo City, and it’s not just the illegal fish. Join hotshot rookie Rick Zengo on his first case as he goes head-to-head with an uncommonly clever crime kingpin.

First in a new mystery/adventure series for middle-graders, this action-filled story features a missing schoolteacher, a mysterious duffle bag and two very unusual police detectives - Rick Zengo and Corey O’Malley. (Fans of Krosoczka’s “Lunch Lady” books will especially enjoy this series.)

This is a fun mix of elements: hard-boiled mystery, buddy cop story, atmospheric world-building, and funny animals. Zengo, the rookie detective showing up for his first day on the police squad, is gung-ho and headstrong, ready to rush into action and take down all the bad guys with total confidence in his abilities. He gets partnered with the wise old detective who's been around the block more times than anyone can count. A frog has apparently been murdered over an illegal fish deal gone bad, and it's up to Zengo and O'Malley to track down what happened. Is apparent do-gooder Frank Pandini Jr. secretly behind the illegal trade, just like his infamous dad?

Rookie detective Zengo, a young and impulsive graduate from police academy, gets teamed up with veteran detective O'Malley, a much older and slightly crankier character. Together, these two detectives have to solve a missing person's case involving the city's beloved English teacher, Mr. Hopkins. But how does the illegal underground fish trade tie into all of this? Was Mr. Hopkins involved in some shady crime?

"Slow down, rookie. You're moving way too fast."

"And we don't have time to work at a snail's pace."
-----
"Ahem!" A family of snails scurried past. The father shot Zengo a disgusted look.
-----
Zengo nodded and raised his hand. "Sorry 'bout that."
