This album is a must have for any serious Prince fan. More than any other album, this was the true beginning of the Minneapolis Sound. This was a groundbreaking album. "Dirty Mind" redefined all the funk rock music that preceded it -- it was a game-changer! Prince's use of synthesizers and the Linn Drum Machine on this album made everybody sit up and listen to a new type of funk music. Prince was one of the first artists to use the Linn Drum Machine on an album.
The songs on this album were very controversial when it was released in 1980. "Sister" is a twisted song that many people don't like, but aside from this, "Dirty Mind" is a truly brilliant masterpiece. "Dirty Mind" is still just as relevant today (in 2016) as it was when it was released. Any musician who wants to play the Minneapolis Sound should use this as a guide and starting point. This has always been my favorite Prince album, which says a lot because I own about 30 of his albums (including some bootlegs).
