For more years than we know, we have lived as we choose to live... Free, by our own rules, according to our own ways. And may those devils down there know this... This is our land and this is our blood, and we will never leave this mountain!
===
My name is Asa Farrell. It's also true that I wandered. I left this mountain almost 10 years ago, and, yes, I was lost. I robbed, I stole, I lied, I cheated, I sinned. I lived in a building that was 500 feet tall. I communed with so-called holy men, liars, all of them. I acquired money, spent it on women and poisons. See, their world is of a darkness. For them, there's no respect or even tolerance for outsiders like us. When they look at us, at this mountain, they don't see us and our chilluns and life as it was meant to be. They don't see blooming trees and rocks and cool, clear waters. What they see is millions and millions of their dollars waiting to be dug up and burnt.

Farrells didn't kill your daddy. Booze and pills killed your daddy, same as it's killing him.

We agree on some things, and we disagree on others. Where we agree, we both want to raise our girls right and give them a future. But we can't do that without work. ... I come off from my second tour of Iraq and I worked steady, but I ain't had a job in near three years now. That's tough. And that's hard. Um, but now there's hope for me and my family and all the families represented here tonight 'cause... that's right! You said it, brother! ... These good people here, they come here and they offer us jobs so we can hold our heads up high. You know, bring this town back from the brink a little bit. ... Them Farrells, they don't own that land they live on. They got no right to be up there. They don't pay taxes on it. They don't put their kids in our schools. That's right. They don't abide by our laws. So I just got to wonder why... Why we gotta play by the rules, and them Farrells don't.

j

Look. I'm all for jobs. I am. But these mountains, they... they don't belong to us. They belong to god. And... and we've got no right to blow them up. I need a job! Now, they say they're... they're gonna create hundreds of positions. But if you ask any of those people... Over in Kenlayson or Juviler, where they... they wrecked their water and... and they filled the air with coal dust and the hollows with black sludge. They will tell you that most of the jobs that they're creating are overseas. ... It is true. And once they're done polluting our towns and our schools, they'll take their Billions and they'll just go back home and they'll leave us with our ill health and... and our... and our streams with no fish in them and nowhere for our kids to play. So, listen, I-I just... I say leave them Farrells be... and more importantly, you let that mountain be.

I grew up in the shadow of that hill. So it's like a part of me. I mean, all of us. The Cherokee said it's evil. They called it "blood mountain" or some such thing, that it had dark powers. All I know is, it's beautiful. It changes every day.
===
You got no problem climbing up a barstool, but climbing up a mountain to investigate a goddamn crime? That's too much for you?
===
Human beings can be such different animals, Asa. No different is a bird is to a deer or a mouse to a bear or a bug. You know, we all grow older, maybe wiser, but our beings stay the same. The very first time my son went huntin' with his fa, he cried. He didn't wanna hurt the buck. Now it be fun. The kill. And that's all he sees, and nothing more beyond the bow. From what affliction he suffers? I knoweth not. If I sent him out, where could he go? He's my son. He's mine and mine alone to reckon.

Think you're pretty smart.
-What?
You're pretty smart. Went to college, got your education, sitting behind your desk. You think you know me. Well, yes, I do. You think you know what's up on that mountain, too. But let me tell you something. You don't know a goddamn thing. Because if you knew what was up there, you wouldn't be chasing after it. You would be running as far as you could possibly go in the opposite direction. But you go on. Keep looking. You'll find out.

Thing I fond to most is how pure your spirit be. Done so little lying in your life, don't know how to do it proper at all. Lil Foster, he is steady and sure and as cozy as a blanket. Can't ever be excitin' or new or unknown... Unlike other options.
-There are no other options.
Oh, stop it, you. Don't insult me. I may be close to the grave, but I'm still a woman. I can see love for a man in the face of another of my gender.
-I see him across the way, I hear him talk... My heart beats like I think everyone on the mountain can hear. I wanna tear it out of my chest for making me a fool. I want him, but he'll hurt me. He'll leave again. I know it. But I still love him. And I hate myself for that.

-It's not the number that matters.
What matters?
-What we believe in.
Which is?
-Our freedom.

-These boys get any freer, I'm gonna have a riot on my hands.

OUTSIDERS, is a two season show about a group of Kentucky Appalachians, and their families, who have been squatting on a piece of land for 200 years. They can't go down to the town and the townspeople can't come up to their land. That's the deal. But that's changed when Big Coal comes to the town and they want their land since they have paid for it I like this show as it's a cross between VIKINGS, SONS OF ANARCHY, Mountain Living magazine, and gypsies. It's a lot of fun.

This series borrowed heavily from "Sons of Anarchy" and "Justified" premises. However, plenty of original content when a coal mining corporation tried to evict a clan of mountain hillbillies who had been living for generations in the Appalachian hills above Blackburn, Kentucky. Enjoyed the good acting, the social order/disorder of the highlanders, one "Romeo *& Juliet" love story, jobs vs environmental concerns in coal mining and anarchic groups like militias/cults in the wild.
