A story of child-mother enmeshment and the subsequent struggle to break free. Even if born with a silver spoon, one can be wounded deeply by a narcissistic, disturbed parent.

At times, however it is difficult to feel sympathy for the adult author. I suspect she secretly will always see her mother as more than she really was - which is part of her lingering problem. I was a bit disappointed when I did the inevitable search to delve into the mystery mother's past.

For other troubled daughters, rich or not, I also recommend "The Peaceful Daughter's Guide to Separating from a Difficult Mother" by Karen C.L. Anderson"... otherwise you stay stuck as a lifelong victim.

I think I just read a story about a woman who grew up with a crazy mother. It was okay. Nothing special. A lot of what Leve remembers, especially dialog heard 40 years ago as a child, is cause for a raised eyebrow, or two. Her mother's identity is masked in the book, but a quick Internet search reveals she ERA-era poet and documentarian, Sandra Hochman, which makes the story a fraction more interesting.

Punishing and troubling. Finally a relief that she pulls herself free.
