I know Sounder is considered a modern classic or at least highly recommended for young readers third - fifth grade, but I found the story to be impersonal. I had a difficult time connecting to the characters since Armstrong did not even name them. Although animal stories are popular, the story has to be character driven and this one did not do it for me.
