"Payoff investigates the true nature of motivation, our partial blindness to the way it works, and how we can bridge this gap. With studies that range from Intel to a kindergarten classroom, Ariely digs deep to find the root of motivation--how it works and how we can use this knowledge to approach important choices in our own lives. Along the way, he explores intriguing questions such as: Can giving employees bonuses harm productivity? Why is trust so crucial for successful motivation? What are our misconceptions about how to value our work? How does your sense of your mortality impact your motivation?,"--Baker & Taylor.

I just loved this book; and not only because it didn't require any great investment of time to read. I got hooked right at the Introduction where the writer shared his story of his burn injuries and how he shared this with others.Dan Ariely, the writer, makes some profound statements like "I feel the work I do can have some long-lasting impact on how we go about our lives," very casually. In doing so he tells us what motivation is all about. He talks about interesting experiments which shed light on factors influencing motivation and the results are often counter intuitive. At the risk of being a spoiler let me tell you that money as a motivator is not all that it is cracked up to be!
