Trite dialogue, predictable scenarios. For the most part German soldiers were not uncivil. And they always had their paperwork. Acting was rote, which is a shame since I've seen many of these fine actors in other excellent series. The staging and wardrobe had many weird things, like the small town school assistant in a matching cobalt bra and crocheted sweater. The collecting of arms in the church was unfinished and unresolved. And did you see anyone smoking? Barely made it through the second episode. Sorry, I really wanted to like it.

Breath-taking. This will require me to read more about World War II and also World War 1. The villagers seemed so oddly unprepared and unaware of impending Invasion by the Germans. I would have thought they would have learned more from World War 1. But obviously I need to do some research. Totally captivating. Well done. I highly recommend.

Really, really liked this one. We picked it up for lack of anything else to watch and it quickly became one of our favorites. It has Downton Abbey-level acting and plot. Okay, that may be a slight exaggeration but not much. It's very good. I assume it is historically accurate but will let others who may know more history decide that. If I had to find a negative it would be that it is in French and you will have to read the sub-titles unless of course you can speak French. We will for sure watch any season of this we can find. Suggest you make this one a priority!!

Imagine foreign soldiers entering your town, shooting some citizens, then requisitioning your home, your schools... This (subtitled) series tells the story of the people of a French village who's lives are turned upside down by the entrance of German forces in WWII. The focus is on the people of the village dealing with the unimaginable, and also, adjusting, as we do, and just living their lives. Very interesting and with drama and romance too.

I didn't know about this series until I saw it on the "recently reviewed" tab, I gave it a chance and really love this show, I have almost finished season one (I started it 3 days ago!), unfortunately I have to wait about a month for season 2.
I love the fact that it gives us an idea on how people lived in occupied France, and that the strongest people are not the one you think. There is good and bad people no matter the citizenship.

This is a brilliant series. While it is indeed not a "documentary" on France under occupation it strives (successfully) to present the situation with accuracy and honesty. Hence the bad behavior of the Resistance towards the end (which is not worse than their opponents; Marchetti's killing of Marie Germain and the German SS commander's behavior at the end is certainly the worst all along.

The second World War (and indeed all wars since the Civil War) was different in America from the other involved countries. It never involved what we now unfortunately (thanks, W.!) call the "Homeland". All other countries took heavy civilin losses and massive destruction along with the battlefield casualties. France is just one example. I recommend in this context also a German series (Generation War; Unsere Väter, Unsere Mütter). Almost as good as the French Village.

I am very hooked on this Series. I've watched seasons 1 & 2 and asked the library to order the rest of the seasons. There are apparently seven with the last just airing in 2016 or 2017
