From Taraji P. Henson, Academy Award nominee, Golden Globe winner, and star of the award-winning film Hidden Figures , comes an inspiring and funny memoir--"a bona fide hit" ( Essence )--about family, friends, the hustle required to make it in Hollywood, and the joy of living your own truth.

With a sensibility that recalls her beloved screen characters, including Katherine, the NASA mathematician, Yvette, Queenie, Shug, and the iconic Cookie from Empire , Taraji P. Henson writes of her family, the one she was born into and the one she created. She shares stories of her father, a Vietnam vet who was bowed but never broken by life's challenges, and of her mother who survived violence both at home and on DC's volatile streets. Here, too, she opens up about her experiences as a single mother, a journey some saw as a burden but which she saw as a gift.

Around the Way Girl is also a classic actor's memoir in which Taraji reflects on the world-class instruction she received at Howard University and how she chipped away, with one small role after another, at Hollywood's resistance to give women, particularly women of color, meaty significant roles. With laugh-out-loud humor and candor, she shares the challenges and disappointments of the actor's journey and shows us that behind the red carpet moments, she is ever authentic. She is at heart just a girl in pursuit of her dreams in this "inspiring account of overcoming adversity and a quest for self-discovery, written with vitality and enthusiasm" ( Shelf Awareness ).

This book was an inspiring biography and very enjoyable to read. I identified with some of the experiences that were shared. Taraji shares personal plights of childhood, influences gained from her parents, aspirations, parenting, recognizing her gifts & talents and how to mold and craft them. I also found myself laughing within a few chapters. I would recommend reading this to anyone that is familiar with her work and those interested in pursuing their dreams. She offers little Gems of inspiration of how she made it in the business and life.

I will recommend this book. I did not get a chance to finish this book, but I will be purchasing it for my personal book collection at home. I only got a chance to read Chapter 1 through Chapter 7. I just checked it out at the library first to see if the book was worth purchasing. I must say it is worth purchasing! I think every Cookie and Taraji fan should have a copy of this book! I love the fact the Taraji knew at a early age what she wanted to do in life. She NEVER gave up on her dream to be an Actress on the Big Screen.

"...rather than focusing on finding a man so that I could have a baby, I could take my time, examine those frogs under the light, find the warts, and know, for sure, that it wasn't right before I settled in and wasted precious time. This I appreciated most of all."

I went into reading Taraji P. Henson's memoir simply wanting to know more about her leap of faith decision to leave D.C. for LA with a few hundred dollars to her name and her toddler in tow. But now that I read her memoir in its entirety (in less than 24 hours might I add), I have to admit that I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it. Around The Way Girl is a really, really good book! It's by far one of the best memoirs that I've ever read... seriously! Taraji's writing is authentic and raw but easy to follow and to embrace. I couldn't put the book down for more than 30 minutes at a time, that's how engaging & dope her story is.

If you're looking for a good memoir to read, I highly recommend Around The Way Girl. I'm really considering buying her book for my personal book collection, that's how good it is! I'm definitely going to recommend it to some of my friends.
