3 1/4 stars. I had a different response than some reviews. The very beginning of Esp. 1 was accurate. By 1972, nearly the end of this war two men (maybe 22 to 25) have bonded the past two years in circumstances only a few understand. They've survived horrific events, protected one another and come out the other side, returning changed me to a changed world. This world has no clue what's been going on half a world away. This is no killer crazed story, damaged by drugs, rather damaged by war circumstances.
I'd guess that readers under 55 may have less knowledge of this specific war. The book may be accurately transferred to film, I don't know. The author Max allan collins, to my knowledge, of the age to service may not have. I'm not unhappy there's no 2nd series, I couldn't bear to watch. What I did find accurate was the sad truth for returning soldiers, especially Black American servicemen; Hispanics similar treatment. Little has changed since 1863 for Black American soldiers, into WWI, WWII & Korea. They returned to an ungrateful nation. There are few films I recall that convey this fact - Mudbound, comes to mind.
A disproportionate number of white vets had employment issues also, well conveyed in the film. The story line was plausibel. It was filled with lowlife scumbag criminals coming to violent ends; lots of violent ends! It wasn't violence for the sake of violence. Why so much graphic sex scenes are thrown in always baffle me, it seems to be the US way. Suggestion serves better. I'm glad I stuck with this to the end. Great music of the era made me happy. All gave some, some gave All.
Ya know when you watch some t.v./movie and you forget your watching and you kinda come-to when it's over? Well, that's what this show did for me. I absolutely loved this Series and I was very disappointed that there wouldn't be a Season 2!! Boo!! Hat's off to everyone involved in this series -- actors, writers, designers and of course the spectacular music. I've recommended this show to all my friends!! 5 stars!!
Quarry is a two season drama about a Vietnam Vet returning to the USA, Tenessee in 1972 after two tours of duty in Vietnam. One tour was compulsory and the second tour was voluntary. Mac was involved in a controversial event in Vietnam that became a media event. He is not greeted as a war hero. Mac is a hot head who has trouble adjusting to civilian life. The only thing he does well is kill as per his military training. So he is hired as a professional killer in the civilian world. Mac is also a heavy drinker & behaves like a selfish alcoholic. He is self obsorbed & full of himself. If you like angry self centered alcoholics then this is your movie. If not, it is violent and heavy going.
Quarry is more a psychological thriller than anything else. Mac is a war veteran and a hit-man with a conscience. He has no other choice than to kill to survive or he or his lovely wife will get killed.
I was hard pressed to find anything redeeming about this movie or the characters.
