"When Police Sergeant Hamish Macbeth hears reports of a haunted castle near Drim, he assumes the eerie noises and lights reported by the villagers are just local teenagers going there to smoke pot or, worse, inject themselves with drugs. Still, Hamish decides that he and his policeman, Charlie "Clumsy" Carson, will spend the night at the ruined castle to get to the bottom of the rumors once and for all. There's no sign of any ghost...but then Charlie disappears through the floor. It turns out he's fallen into the cellar. And what Hamish and Charlie find there is worse than a ghost: a dead body propped against the wall. Waiting for help to arrive, Hamish and Charlie leave the castle just for a moment--to eat bacon baps--but when they return, the body is nowhere to be seen. It's clear something strange--and deadly--is going on at the castle, and Hamish must get to the bottom of it before the "ghost" can strike again" --

good book

Closely follows "Death of a Nurse" in time frame. This time Hamish looks for a ghost and finds a body, which disappears immediately after he calls in the investigation team. He finds the body again, and sorts through things with his usual helpers.

Does it seem possible that all books in a series of books by the same author are uniformly excellent? That might be the situation here. " 'I'm telling you, man, you creep me out,'said the youth./ ' Oh, change the TV channel inside your weak brain,' said Hamish. 'Sadie? Come on, lass, what's it to be?'/ 'Go home, Geordie, said Sadie./ 'I am afraid Geordie stays right here,' said Hamish./ Geordie stepped forward swinging his fists. Charlie picked him up as if he were a small child and place him on top of a crate, saying 'Sit there and shut up.'/ "

i have read all her books about Hamish but i thought this one was not one of her best poor storyline with confusing plot lost interest before i had finished the book

Loved the ghost intrigue in this one - a departure from her usual style. Poor Hamish - will his love life ever improve?

Is Beaton using a ghost writer? This Hamish Macbeth book is not that good. It has offensive language and attitudes that, while they might fit in with other types of novels and books I read, don't fit in with Hamish at all. Priscilla and Elspeth only appear briefly, for the sake of appearing. Too many puzzles and people that are a little hard to follow. Hamish Macbeth books are written to a formula - mess with it and you've lost this fan.

I think the author is in her eighties - perhaps it's time to leave Lochdubh behind. (it would be nice to learn about what happened to Sonsie, though!).

I can never decide which of MC Beaton's two main characters I like best, Agatha Raisin or Hamish Macbeth.Death of a Ghost has Hamish on his toes in highly contorted situations and there's a lot of wry humour along the way. What's not to like?

I was a bit disappointed in this book. Not really too much about a ghost as the title implies.
The book meanders along and by the end of the book I kind of lost the story along the way. Enjoyable but not one of M. C. Beatons best

A former high-ranking policeman moves to dreary Drim and engages Hamish MacBeth to get to the bottom of the ghostly sounds emanating from a ruined castle. There are criminal activities and plot twists aplenty - and personal intrigue, too.
