A friend once told me she reads cookbooks like she reads sci-fi, with one thought in mind: "plausible but NOT GONNA HAPPEN!" Whether you intend to make any of these recipes or not, check it out for the beautiful photos. If you are interested in cooking, then better; what I like most about this is it's not got anything to do with special diets. It includes meat and gluten and dairy and something for everyone. All that said, I have one nitpicky comment about this book: what makes a recipe "triumphant"?

I am so "On the fence" with this book.
The high end exotic foodie in me loves it.
The practical budget minded mom says "what in the heck about this book is unfussy?"
I am not familiar with Smitten Kitchen as a blogger, in fact i didn't know it was a blog until reading some of the other comments.
This is not an Every Day cookbook for anyone in my circle, even my outer circle. It is a cookbook to grab for when you want to impress friends with something a little fancy. Christmas dinner at the In-Laws. Having the boss over for dinner (but not at the last minute because you'll have to go shopping for ingredients).
The recipes are solid. The pictures are beautiful. I want to make a lot of the recipes.
I feel like I would have liked this book better with a different title where I wasn't going into it with certain expectations. The recipes are triumphant. They are not (to me at least) every day, or unfussy.

As a fan of the Smitten Kitchen blog, I was a bit disappointed by how few recipes in this book appealed to me. Having said that, two of the three recipes I did try were quite good: the "one-pan farro with tomatoes" and the "wintry apple bake with double ginger crumble". I also tried the recipe for "a dense, grainy daily bread” and really didn’t like the bread at all (even though I do generally like dense, grainy breads!). I will continue to follow the Smitten Kitchen blog, but for me this cookbook was just okay.

Such a great cookbook. I've never had a fail with one of Deb's recipes, from the books or blog. The blini are amazing! I've made them twice. A great selection of recipes for many different dietary needs as well.

Deb Perelman is my kitchen saviour! I have both of her books and use them frequently to help me plan meals. I also search her blog for inspiration. Her photos are gorgeous and her intros often make me laugh.
