The Wedding Portrait is an essential book for kids about standing up for what's right. Here are stories of direct action from around the world that are bookended by the author s wedding story. He and his bride led their wedding party to a protest, and were captured in a photo by the local newspaper kissing in front of a line of police just before being arrested.

This is an incredible and essential book for kids, though really anyone would benefit from reading it. Nagara explains basic principles of civil disobedience and various strategies, like sit-ins, hunger strikes, etc., in precise, straightforward ways that are perfect for younger readers. I especially liked that the author didn't focus exclusively on events related to the Civil Rights Movement. While obviously important, most readers are likely to have some familiarity with this topic. Nagara takes equal time to explore the meaning and importance of movements by the U'wa people in Columbia, the people of India who rose up again British imperialists, farmworkers in Florida, and much more. He even explains the nuclear arms race and continued nuclear threat today in a way that - I can't emphasize enough - even the youngest reader would understand. Plus, there's the touching story behind the wedding portrait, which ties together all the lessons Nagara explores throughout the book. Can't recommend it highly enough.
