Ten years ago, when Isaiah Quintabe was just a boy, his beloved brother was killed by an unknown assailant. The unsolved crime has gnawed at his gut and kept him up nights, boiling with anger and thoughts of revenge. The search for the killer sent him plunging into despair and nearly destroyed his life. Now, Isaiah has a flourishing career, a new dog, and a near-iconic status as a PI in his hometown of East Long Beach, but a chance encounter reopens a wound that never fully healed. He has to begin the hunt again - or lose his mind. A case takes him and his skeptical don't-call-me-a-sidekick partner, Dodson, to Vegas, where Chinese gangsers and a terrifying seven-foot loan shark are stalking a beautiful DJ and her deadbeat boyfriend. If Isaiah doesn't find the couple first, they'll be murdered. Awaiting the outcome is the love of IQ's life: fail, and he'll lose her. Isaiah's quest is fraught with treachery, menace, and startling twists, leading him to the mastermind behind his brother's death, Isaiah's own Moriarty. Rich with action, suspense, and ingenius surprises, Righteous confirms Joe Ide as one of crime fiction's most exciting new voices.

I really like this series! I read this at lunchtime over the course of a month - so picked it up here and there and read a bit at a time. There are a lot of characters coming in and out, and the scenes jump quickly, so I did have to check back and forth a bit to remember where I left off - but looked forward to reading it each time I found a chance. Looking forward to the next one as well! Go IQ!

This continuation of the IQ saga is a fun read. IQ grows in increments, learning about love, friendship and dog training. He stilt has a way to go with them, but by the end of the novel, it gives us hope. Not only for his future- but for our future for the third book in the series.

IQ wanders through the seamy underbelly of Long Beach and Las Vegas, somehow surviving each encounter with gangs and mobsters. Bodies pile up, but not so much at his hand- more like fortuitous timing and last second manipulation. Karma is a bitch.

Compelling characters from the tough side of town. The writing, like one of the characters, is "sure and soulful."

This series is getting great reviews including Janet Maslin (The New York Times) "Aggressively entertaining plotting is paired with the kind of dialogue for which readers love Don Winslow. ...a Los Angeles classic right from the start."

I really liked his first IQ book, and I found this one entertaining as well. The chronology was unnecessarily choppy, jumping around in the IQ story for no apparent reason. But the character development is particularly interesting. Will Isaiah find a worthy paramour in the girl from the wrecking yard? Will he and Dodson find a way to work together? I guess we'll find out in book three.

Ok, but not outstanding. I had the feeling reading it I'd heard this story before and didn't get anything new out of it. The main character was one of the strong points, but overall the writing style was pretty blah.

I *really* wanted to like this story. I like the character a lot, but the story is much too fragmented spinning off into different plot elements that I found distracting.
