Good movie and good acting although sometimes the script makes the acting seem forced. The movie has enough in it to be worth watching. I thought Pierce Brosnan was very good in this role.

The movie was just ok. Found it slow going and at times was lost with the point of the movie. Did not find the movie to be riveting excitement and I could walk away and miss a part with out really missing a part of the story. It is a shame as I felt the actors and actress did a wonderful job. The end of the movie also did not make sense either. A philosopher professor who is full of guilt for betraying his wife confesses and he has a delusion of what reality actually is. Acting was great the movie not so good. Ending just did not make sense but then most drunks do not. What the hell was the significance of the matches with the phone number written on it?

Overlooked mystery. Well acted. Don’t expect a shoot ‘em up thriller. This is a mystery which plays on the theme of the sketchy protagonist who we learn is deeply flawed. Which is why I don’t understand the negative reviews since the main character was supposed to be unlikable, yet this is pointed out as a reason not to like the film? The underlying theme is simply what is the truth and the failure of memory to provide the evidence for truth. The detective is a believer in fact corroborated by hard tangible evidence. In the era in which we live where actual observed evidence is discounted as truth this film is highly relevant and thought provoking.

The failures of this film are many. Principally though it comes down to the husband and wife at the center of the picture are thoroughly unlikable, and not in any Liz-&-Dick-WHO'S-AFRAID-OF-VIRGINIA-WOOLF? sort of way. It's film noir targeted to whom? Juveniles? Soccer moms from the exurbs? You want to say, "Shame on you, Guy Pearce. You're better than this." But who has the right to criticize someone for earning a paycheck?

A seasoned detective found a respected family man the prime suspect in the disappearance of a young woman and began to build the case. Meanwhile the suspect's facile began to crack exposing his little lies and troubling history. A decent police vs suspect thriller with a thoughtful finish.

Just watched the first episode of a 2013 Finnish "Private eye Vares episodes 1-3" and it also included an unfortunate woman who put up with a serial cheating husband, a professor as well, not so ridiculous of a premise in the wacky world of crime.

Story was okay but ...……. the ending hmmmm ???

This dramatic thriller film stars Guy Pearce and Pierce Brosnan as they work against each other to discover the truth. Evan Birch is a well respected professor and man until one of his female students go missing, and the head detective believes that Birch played a role in it. The movie could have been better than it was, which I blame on sloppy writing and a somewhat circumstantial plot that was fairly easy to dissect. I thought that it was enough to be enjoyable but not enough for me to run out and recommend it to any of my friends. I would rate this movie a solid 3/5 stars for its mediocre performance. @The_Reviewer of the Teen Review Board at the Hamilton Public Library

I was really excited about this movie but the ending was anticlimactic and a supreme disappointed.

Only the first quote has been posted in IMDb today:
Malloy: Take this little problem here on your board. The answer seems pretty plain to me.
Evan Birch: Does it? Well, be my guest. Prove this chair exists.
Malloy: What chair?
So there's no such thing as truth?
-Well, let me ask you this. Can I tell you the truth, or can I tell you what I perceive or interpret as the truth,
Zeno's progressive dichotomy paradox proposes that before a person can walk across a room, he must go halfway. But before he gets halfway, he must cover a quarter that distance, and so on and so on to an infinite number of decreasing distances. Based on this logic, the man was never able to take the first step. Zeno demonstrated, in a way, that motion was impossible. ... A paradox exposes the limits of language. We all know from experience that we are able to walk across a room. It's only in our language that uncertainty arises.

You might consider philosophy the logical clarification of thoughts. But I'm more of a teacher than a practicing philosopher. This is relevant somehow, is it?
-We never know what's relevant until we hear it. You might consider crime investigation the logical clarification of evidence.
Evan, please don't do the whole absent-minded professor thing. It used to be cute, and I just... I need you here from now on.
Wittgenstein would spend his nights having sex with strange men in parks, right? And then he would go home and write about language's inability
to define things like... Like truth and morality. And does his behavior make his arguments any less valid?
-Well, no, but couldn't you say that his theories stem from fear rather than rational thought?
I don't see how. I mean, the duty of the philosophic mind is to rise above the personal and contemplate the universal, right?

You promised you'd always tell me the truth.
-What? That was before I went back to school. It sounds like something
i would have said.
Oh, you mean you wouldn't promise me that now?
-No. I... Well, I can't actually promise you that. Nobody can. I mean, what I should have said was that I... I promise to always tell you what I interpret and remember as the truth.
I like your original promise better. That's the one I'm gonna hold you to.
That's what everybody thinks, but cops don't ask questions. They plant land mines.

I will always tell you the truth.
-Yeah. Always the truth... Not what you interpret.
There's no starting over. We tried that moving here. We can only go forward, either together or apart. You can't change what you've done, can't change that I stood by and I watched you make choices, even though you knew they could destroy everything that we've built.
... but don't look to me for absolution or forgiveness. I'm no shrink. I'm like you, someone who looks for proof. And when I find it, I sure as hell hold on to it tighter than you.
... humans leave traces, fibers from clothing, skin fragments, footprints,
and there's ...
You know what you don't understand? I don't even care that you did it anymore. I don't, but it's the lie. You've been telling me, you've been telling yourself nothing happened for so many years, I think you actually believe it.
And I'm terrified about what else you could convince yourself of.
