The Spy by Clive Cussler. --- Clive Cussler is a prolific author of a whole shelf full of action-packed novels and this is one of them. The Spy is set in the time is just a bit before WW I. The major military countries; Japan, England, France, the United States and Germany are engaged in a furious arms race. All of these countries were attempting to out do one in developing dreadnaughts capable of resisting deadlier shells; canons with greater range and accuracy; torpedoes with greater range, accuracy and destructive power. All of these powers were engaged in espionage do discover each other’s military secrets. Some of these countries were not above engaging in sabotage to cripple their adversaries. Enter Isaac Bell of the Van Dorn Detective Agency who is drawn into this world when is asked to solve the mystery of the death, seemingly by suicide, of a researcher for the navy. What begins as a seemingly simple, straight forward suicide soon mushrooms into something much larger. This book is quite enjoyable what with cross-continental train trips and descents into the gang-world of crime in early twenty century New York. There’s suspense galore. No sooner do you figure out who the bad guys are than you realize you’ve let the author lead you astray.
