Ruby Red is a novel of intrigue, mystery, romance, fantasy and history set in modern London. This first of three gem-themed instalments follows Gwyneth, who learns of her ancestors’ time travel history. Her narration is winning and full of humour, the story fast-paced and absorbing. I loved the system, history and symbolizing of time travel, which, despite being fantasy, was very well-thought-out and believable. There is excellent foreshadowing, with just enough information to keep suspense, without divulging too much of the plot. Given that this was translated from German, all the truly funny humour is all the more impressive, and authentic to the London setting. Gwyneth was a naïve character, but she was authentic and appealing, and the book kept me gripped following her adventures. The contrast between the mystery, romance and laughs was executed very well. The side characters were also entertaining, especially Xemerius and Lesley. The romance was decent, though a bit rushed; I look forward to seeing how it plays out. A revelation was implied late on, though the cliffhanger is suspenseful. There were very few imperfections for me, overall. Among the best was the world-building the author created, the secrets that were hinted at and the tension that remained throughout.
