One of the author’s best in the series. Complex, thought provoking character studies with plenty of twists and turns. One does have to suspend the belief somewhat that Barbara rolls the dice with her career, yet, on the other hand, she is single, with little social life, and Azhar and Hadiyyah are the closest thing to family she has. I felt her desperation at not being allowed to go look for the little girl she loves and the dismissal of others who don’t acknowledge or consider the validity and depth of her feelings. Yes, this novel is long and detailed, just as Harry Potter books are. Personally, I was so immersed in the dilemmas of the characters and the mystery, and the setting and culture of Lucca, Italy, did not want this book to end. But I am an Elizabeth George fan. She always makes me think and consider the nuances of the choices we make and the pain we mask. If you are new to this author, this is not the book to start with. Start with the first book of the series, read them in order, and you will see how these characters have been developed over the years. The preceding books help to define the next one.
