I really wanted to like The End of Love. It has a great premise: four stories tackling love in all its different forms and points of view. We have a young, married couple, young, adolescent love, parental love, and the love between friends or platonic love. That is an ambitious set to explore in a short story collection. But the book never quite comes together, and the collection left me cold and numb at the end. The tragic, bittersweet tone that weaves throughout the four stories falls flat and is tiresome. I think perhaps it might be a problem with the translation; the language feels wooden and contrived. A disappointment from McSweeneys, which publishes great fiction.
