Beginning readers who are ready to dive into chapter books will find a new hero in Billy Miller. Not because Billy's life is remarkable or unusual, but because it's "quietly spectacular in a wonderfully ordinary way" (Kirkus Reviews). Kids can easily identify with Billy as he worries that his teacher might be mad at him, or gets frustrated when his little sister covers his diorama with glitter, or struggles to write a poem about his mother. As a warm, funny, younger elementary school character, Billy is sure to remind readers of Beverly Cleary's popular heroine Ramona, yet Billy's story has a gentle, authentic appeal of its own.
