The Giver is a thrilling story set in an idealistic and safe community where routine, conformity and organization are the norm. The world is set in grey-scale, monotonous and following a strict set of rules to keep the community in line. A family unit consists of a mother, father, one girl and one boy, where none of which are actually blood related. There are no holidays, no birthdays, and no ‘fun’ essentially. There is no conflict and no problems, because this systematic life is all the people know. Roles are given out at the age of 12 to determine a child's job in the community, decided by the community elders. When the main character, Jonas, receives the honorary role as The Receiver, he is given the memories of the outside world and what the community doesn’t have anymore. These are memories of life as we know now, with love and colour, imagination and war. Now with the knowledge of past generations, Jonas relives the feelings of pain, war, love and other experiences. He learns what colour is, along with seasons and temperature and affection. Jonas plans to escape his boring community for a better world- something that hasn’t been completed successfully in a long time. I absolutely enjoyed reading this book, and I recommend it to anyone interested in dystopian genres and science fiction.
