I really, really wanted to like this book as Paris is my favorite city in the world. I could not, however, like or bond with the characters. One is a drunkard in debt to loan sharks who is fleeing from his debt. Another lies to the author for whom she has worked for years - both in his medical care and in the requested burning of his notebooks. Are we supposed to feel sorry for these irresponsible and lying people. The worst violator of my sense of justice is a man who has seen the torture and murder of a loved one in front of his face and chooses to traumatize the children of Paris via puppetry. If you have known the pain this young man experienced, you should know better than to inflict pain on innocents. He could have given the children joy. Name dropping does not make a book better - Ernest Hemingway, Sylvia Beach, Gertrude Stein, Josephine Baker, Sylvia Beach ( a treasure ) . The person I liked the most in the book was Ms. Baker. Very disappointed. Kristi & Abby Tabby p.s. I listened to this book. The narrator's "French accent" came and went. The name of the jazz club where everyone was to meet seemed to change from what sounded like Le Chat Bleu to Le Chat Blanche - Blue Cat / White Cat.. He should have given up on the fake French and simply used correct English.
