It's hard for young people today to imagine a school where not all children are welcome. But in 1955, that was the case in Clinton, Tennessee. "This Promise of Change" is an excellent account of the desegregation of Clinton High School in Clinton, Tennessee as told by one of the twelve African-American students who courageously stood up for freedom and equality. Known as the Clinton 12, these students braved unthinkable odds to lay a path for a better life not just for themselves but for all students. Written in prose, Jo Ann Allen Boyce shares her experience in this excellent memoir.
