Each story is followed through news articles written at the time each crime happened, and is followed through the investigation, trial and sentencing. Historical photographs, many from the Kingdom of Callaway Historical Society, are included with almost every story. The heart-wrenching saga of the murder of Auxvasse Doctor Albert Domann is covered in depth from his disappearance to the execution of his killer, Doyle Williams, fourteen long years later. Before 1937 each county in Missouri held its own executions. The last public hanging in Callaway was George McKeever, who killed Highway Patrol Officer Benjamin Booth. McKeever was hanged on December 18, 1936 in an old barn on Market Street in Fulton. Haywood Ross, shot in the back while he was in bed. Annie Johnson, strangled to death by her husband of 47 years. Raymond Bagby, a black man, hounded by the law because of his relationship with a much younger white woman, snapped and killed Lena Smith and her new boyfriend. The tiny town of Concord terrorized by poisoned chewing gum left for children. Insane man who chopped two coworkers to death with a meat cleaver. Richard Johnson, who killed his neighbor with a shotgun blast to his back, and was acquitted on the basis of the Unwritten Law. William Grider, five of his Holts Summit neighbors plotted to murder him, and killed the wrong man by mistake. Mary Selby, an elderly Millersburg woman beaten to death by a stranger who was hidden in her closet. Walter Glenn Thompson woke up to find someone trying to smother him, he fought off his attackers and fled across plowed fields wearing only his underwear, but somehow wound up convicted of murder.. Billy Howe, beaten and tortured by robbers looking for money he didn't have. George Chase and Robert Newsom, both beaten to death by Fulton State Hospital patients. Victoria Hale, at 24 she shot her sister-in-law in the road near Boydsville, rode her horse to Carrington, boarded a train to Fulton to turn herself in to the Sheriff. She was admitted to Fulton State Hospital without a trial, where she remained until her death at age 81. Jack Rogers, a Fulton Community leader who was on the regional board of the Boys Scouts of America, arrested for child pornography, later sent to federal prison for performing sex change surgeries in a motel room. Many additional stories 333 pages. Includes a complete index.
